The Esplanade

EsplanadeFriends has so much exciting news to share!

Our mission is to beautify, improve, and ReInvent the waterfront from 60th – 120th Streets. As part of our mission, we aim to bring you spectacular public art. In June, 2016, EsplanadeFriends installed internationally renowned artist Kenny Scharf’s NEVERENDINGOGO, a fantastic mural banner commissioned just for the East Harlem waterfront at 116th St! The banner is accompanied by a permanent colorful mural of faces painted by Kenny Scharf on an idle brick column formerly covered by graffiti; this work is titled TotemOh.

As many of you know, the NEVERENDINGGOGO banner was stolen over the weekend of June 25-26, 2016. EsplanadeFriends is currently reprinting the banner, and the reinstallation is tentatively planned for early July, 2016.

In other news, we are thrilled that Pier107 has received funding commitments from the State and the City! The EsplanadeFriends-commissioned vision by JACOBSCHANGARCHITECTURE was featured in the spring of 2016 as a potential design in a DNAinfo article announcing an additional $1 million in NY State funding for the dilapidated pier’s reinvention. Read More HERE

It’s finally spring and the bulbs we planted in the 96th Street planter are blooming! More landscaping to add to what we did last year is on its way–and the beautiful plants will be watered with the water tank that we purchased with your donations.

Our Annual Spring Programming Fun On The Esplanade began again in May 2016! EsplanadeFriends again brought MUSIC and FREE ICE CREAM to the waterfront, as well as NEW ENVIRONMENTAL ADVENTURES!!!

We can’t wait to see you there this summer and fall. Don’t forget, we need your donations to help us continue our mission to
REINVENT THE EAST RIVER ESPLANADE!
