 Announcements:

Friends of the East River Esplanade sends a hearty welcome to our new Executive Director, Chris O’Brien.  Chris, an upper east side resident, comes to us not only as a former Coast Guard Officer stationed here in NY, but as the former Director of Fleet Week, and former Executive Director of Operation Sail.  Chris, also a former Boeing executive, served most recently as Director of Operations for the World Ocean Festival, which is part of the UN effort to raise awareness regarding ocean protection and sustainable use.  Please say hello to Chris out on the Esplanade and feel free to contact him with comments and concerns regarding our waterfront.

 On The Esplanade:

August 15th saw the grand opening of the much anticipated NYC Ferry Service at 90th Street.  Our very own Jennifer Ratner was honored to attend the initial ferry ride along with Council Member Ben Kallos and Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright.  See the Our Town article about the new ferry service here.

The newly renovated section of the Esplanade and gardens that will surely come to be known as "The Rockefeller Walk" (63rd St - 68th St) was the talk of the Esplanade this summer!  Completed with the generous support of Rockefeller University, this beautiful walkway will represent what can be done along the Esplanade!  Additionally, Rockefeller has committed to preserving this section of the Esplanade in perpetuity through an endowment that will fund the care of the gardens.  Thank you Rockefeller University for supporting Friends of the East River Esplanade and our, now beautiful, new section of the Esplanade!

As we say goodbye to the summer, we are pleased to note that the early Summer rains made for some beautiful growing months for the Esplanade's gardens.  Keep an eye out for our new Friends of the East River Esplanade bulletin board coming to 96th Street soon.  This fall, be sure to stop by and see all the beautiful plants, flowers. and trees, and send your pictures to EastRiverEsplanade@gmail.com to be featured on our Instagram!

Public Art Update:
This summer, our project "bait station" for the fishermen on the East Harlem Esplanade continued to move forward in the design and planning phase.  This functional public art piece will be dedicated to the fishermen of El Barrio and add a beautiful yet functional pop of red to the waterfront.  As planning continues, we expect to be able to share more exciting news on the bait stations later this fall!

Moving Forward!
As we move into the final months of 2018, our advocacy for the Esplanade won’t take a break. EsplanadeFriends will continue to serve on the East River Esplanade Task Force and The East Harlem Resiliency Study Project Advisory Committee (spearheaded by NYC Parks), all in an effort to urge the City to repair the dilapidated and dangerous East Harlem waterfront and more.  Bikers, runners, walkers, fishermen, and you deserve much better!

However, nothing happens without your support. If you are able, please donate and support the betterment of our city.
